A 15% Czech Republic income tax rate does not mean an employee receives 85% of gross salary. Insurance contributions are deducted too, while statutory tax credits can reduce the tax itself. VAT and corporate profit tax use different bases.

To assess 2026 liabilities, identify the income source and tax residence first. Neither Nigerian nationality nor a Czech residence card alone determines the bill. A person relocating from Nigeria also needs to track the move date and any continuing Nigerian income.

Which rates concern your income

PaymentOrdinary ruleImportant distinction
Personal income tax15%; 23% on the part above the thresholdThe higher rate does not apply to the entire base.
Employee social contribution7.1% of the insurance baseA separate deduction with its own reliefs and limits.
Employee health contribution4.5% of the insurance baseThe employer pays an additional employer share.
VATStandard 21%, reduced 12%Exemptions exist; treatment depends on the transaction.
Corporate profit taxStandard 21%Not a single tax rate for both the owner and the business.

Do not mechanically add all these percentages. Their bases, payers and reductions differ. In particular, do not subtract ordinary employer-funded contributions again from the employee’s agreed gross salary.

The 23% threshold and tax residence

For 2026, 15% applies to the part of the annual taxable base up to CZK 1,762,812 and 23% to the excess. The corresponding monthly payroll advance threshold is CZK 146,901. An annual base and monthly advance cannot use the same limit.

For an illustrative annual base of CZK 1,800,000, only CZK 37,188 falls into the 23% band. This demonstrates the threshold before tax credits and personal adjustments.

Under domestic law, residence can arise from a home available in circumstances indicating an intention to live there permanently, or habitual presence of at least 183 days in the calendar year. “No Czech tax before 183 days” is therefore wrong: accommodation and the income source also matter.

A resident generally has Czech and foreign income considered, while a non-resident is assessed on relevant Czech-source income. A two-country case also requires checking any actually effective treaty provisions. A residence permit and tax residence are different classifications.

Example: CZK 50,000 gross monthly pay

This monthly model assumes the employee has signed Prohlášení poplatníka so the basic credit is applied through payroll. Gross pay is CZK 50,000, with ordinary Czech insurance coverage and no special insurance relief. Only standard contributions and the basic credit are considered; child relief, extra benefits, housing deductions and other adjustments are excluded.

StepCalculationCrowns
Gross salaryStarting amount50,000
Employee social contribution50,000 × 7.1%−3,550
Employee health contribution50,000 × 4.5%−2,250
Tax advance before credit50,000 × 15%7,500
Basic tax creditReduces tax, not gross salary−2,570
Tax after credit7,500 − 2,570−4,930
Payable50,000 − 3,550 − 2,250 − 4,93039,270

The basic credit is CZK 30,840 annually or CZK 2,570 when applied monthly. The payroll declaration can be signed with only one employer for the same period. A non-resident may also qualify for the basic credit; other reliefs need separate checks.

This example distinguishes tax from total deductions. It does not describe average pay, an entrepreneur’s income or a personal payslip. It assumes a 2026 employee with the basic credit arranged and no special insurance relief or further deductions; it is not an OSVČ calculation.

Czech VAT and the two registration thresholds

Standard DPH is 21%, with 12% for specified goods and services. Some transactions are exempt. Qualifying printed and electronic book supplies are exempt with input-tax deduction rights; labelling all education and books “0%” mixes different treatments.

For ordinary domestic business turnover, two calendar-year thresholds apply. Exceeding CZK 2,000,000 normally makes the business a payer from 1 January of the following year unless an earlier option is chosen in time. Exceeding CZK 2,536,500 makes it a payer from the next day. The relevant registration application is due within ten working days: do not wait until January to act after the first threshold.

These thresholds do not cover every registration trigger. Certain cross-border transactions can create identifikovaná osoba status, which differs from full VAT-payer status. Before issuing a foreign invoice, check the service, place of taxation and customer’s status. Nigerian business connections do not remove these Czech checks.

Self-employment and a separate company

OSVČ is an individual carrying on independent activity. Determine the taxable base after the applicable expenses and assess insurance separately. Turnover, profit and the bank balance can differ. The CZK 50,000 employee illustration cannot be applied to an entrepreneur’s invoice.

An ordinary company’s standard profit-tax rate is 21%, with different treatment for special categories. Do not mix company money with the owner’s personal funds. Salary, director remuneration and distributed profit require separate assessment. Paying corporate tax does not settle the recipient’s personal tax automatically.

Nigerian income and annual reporting

A Czech resident with Nigerian salary, rent, business receipts or investment income should not exclude it simply because some tax was paid in Nigeria. Determine each income’s source, residence treatment and any available double-tax relief under the actually applicable law. The Russian treaty suspension discussed in the Russian version is not a Nigerian restriction and is not copied here.

List receipts by country and type: salary, services, rent, interest, dividends and asset sales. Keep evidence of amounts, costs and foreign tax. A transfer between your own accounts does not by itself determine the tax nature of the money. Preserve original-currency records and the exchange conversion used for Czech reporting.

After year-end, establish whether employer annual reconciliation is sufficient or a personal return is required. Side activity, several sources and foreign income need separate attention. The 2026 filing campaign mainly concerns 2025 income: do not reuse those dates as the deadlines for 2026 income.

Checks before calculating or filing

  1. Fix the tax year, residence periods and income sources.
  2. Separate personal income, business turnover, corporate profit and VAT turnover.
  3. Check payroll credits and employee insurance deductions.
  4. For business activity, assess DPH and cross-border transactions separately from income tax.
  5. Choose the correct reporting form and current deadline for your circumstances.

For a relocation from Nigeria, retain the employment start date, housing evidence and Nigerian payment history. Discuss retained foreign business activity before assuming that Czech payroll settles every liability. The payroll example explains one regular employee scenario; it does not promise the same net amount to every new resident.
