Moving to Spain from Nigeria starts with choosing a lawful route that matches what you will actually do: employment, study, family life, qualifying remote work, independent business or residence without work. Each route has its own conditions, documents and application process.
Buying a home does not itself create a right to reside. Spain’s investor residence route closed to new applications on 3 April 2025, as confirmed by the Spanish government. Transitional cases should not be presented as an open Golden Visa programme.
Choose by activity and family circumstances
| Your situation | Route to investigate | Question to resolve first |
|---|---|---|
| A Spanish employer offers a job | Employed-worker or qualifying specialist route | Who obtains authorisation, and which job conditions apply? |
| You have an eligible course place | Appropriate study or training permission | Does this course qualify, and what work rights follow? |
| You work remotely for overseas businesses | International telework | Are you an employee or an independent professional? |
| You intend to live without work | Non-lucrative residence | Can you meet the current financial and insurance requirements? |
| You have a qualifying family relationship | Relevant family route | Which rules apply to the sponsor’s status and your relationship? |
| You will operate a business | Self-employment or an eligible entrepreneur route | Does the activity meet the selected procedure’s conditions? |
Use this as a shortlist, not a finding that you qualify. Start with the Migration Ministry’s official procedures and the Spanish consulate responsible for your residence.
Employment and business are different paths
For ordinary employment, investigate the employer’s authorisation responsibilities before arranging a visa. A job offer alone is insufficient. Our guide to finding work in Spain from Nigeria covers the practical sequence.
Specialist employment routes have their own qualification, employer and salary rules. Do not apply one advertised threshold to every qualified worker. Similarly, registering a company does not automatically give its owner residence or permission to work. Establish the suitable business route and evidence before committing to a lease or investment.
Remote employees and professionals follow different limits
The government’s international-telework page distinguishes employment from professional activity. Under that route, an employee works for businesses outside Spain. An independent professional may have Spanish business activity within the stated limit of 20% of total professional activity.
A laptop and a foreign customer are not the whole eligibility test. Check the work relationship, experience or qualifications, financial requirements and social-security arrangements for your case. Avoid relying on an old fixed monthly-income figure without checking its current legal basis.
Study is not one universal work permission
Check the exact course and authorisation category before paying tuition. University study, language courses and other training should not be treated as identical. The official training procedure is one category-specific reference.
Do not assume that every course allows an application from inside Spain or automatically permits 30 hours of work. Ask which provision applies to the programme and to any proposed employment. A plan for work after graduation also needs its own eligibility check.
Family and non-lucrative residence need their own evidence
For a family application, identify the sponsor’s nationality and immigration status, the qualifying relationship and any dependency or support requirements. Rules for a Spanish citizen’s relative, another EU citizen’s family and a non-EU resident’s family should not be merged into one checklist.
Non-lucrative residence is intended for residence without the authorised work activity of an employment route. Do not assume it permits remote work simply because the payer is abroad. Confirm the current conditions, financial evidence and insurance requirements before choosing it.
Prepare documents for the selected Nigeria procedure
Use the Lagos consular services information and confirm responsibility for your place of residence. Build a checklist for the actual category rather than one supposedly universal packet.
- Passport, application and identity requirements.
- Employment, admission, family or income evidence relevant to the route.
- Insurance, criminal-record and medical documents where required.
- Document-specific translation and legalisation requirements.
- Submission method, fees and deadlines for that category.
Do not replace legalisation with an assumed apostille process for all Nigerian documents. Confirm the accepted procedure, certificate validity and translation before paying for preparation.
A visa, NIE and TIE serve different purposes
A visa, a residence authorisation, an identification number and a physical identity card are not interchangeable. Check what the decision authorises, when it takes effect and which arrival formalities apply. A TIE is evidence of the relevant status rather than a universal immigration route by itself.
Plan the local registration, identity-card and social-security steps relevant to your permission. Keep the decision and expiry dates accessible and understand the conditions for renewal, work and absences.
Budget, tax residence and longer-term plans
Separate official fees from insurance, document preparation, travel, housing deposits and optional advice. Obtain current quotes instead of treating a national article’s broad cost range as a personal budget.
Residence permission does not settle your tax position. Check Spanish tax residence and foreign-income rules, and use Spanish salary benchmarks when evaluating employment.
Long-term residence and citizenship are later, separate applications. The Justice Ministry’s nationality guidance gives a general ten-year residence requirement and conditional shorter periods. An eligible spouse case can use a one-year residence period under its conditions; marriage does not produce automatic citizenship after one year.
Use the correct financial reference
For non-lucrative residence, the regulation uses 400% of IPREM for the main applicant and 100% for each dependent, alongside the route’s other requirements. See Royal Decree 1155/2024. Use the official reference and period applicable to the application, not an undated €30,000 approximation. This route is not a substitute for permission to work remotely.
For international telework, the government procedure describes 200% of SMI for the principal, 75% for the first accompanying family member and 25% for each additional member. Check the authority’s current calculation and annual/monthly basis rather than reusing a fixed monthly figure. Income evidence, employment or client relationships and the social-security arrangement are separate requirements.
Exceptional residence is not a planned tourist route
Arraigo categories have their own conditions. For example, the social arraigo guidance sets a qualifying two-year presence requirement together with additional evidence. This is not permission for every visitor to stay and work after two years. International protection addresses its own qualifying facts; it should not be presented as a general employment alternative.
Questions before choosing a route
Does buying a flat give me a new investor visa?
No. New applications under the former investor route closed on 3 April 2025. Buying a property and qualifying for another residence route are separate matters; transitional cases require individual review.
Can every student work 30 hours?
No. The education category, authorisation and compatibility conditions matter. Do not apply a higher-education rule to every language course or assume study permission guarantees a later job permit.
Can I apply after entering as a tourist?
Only where the selected category and your lawful status permit an in-country application. Entry permission alone does not establish eligibility or a right to work while waiting.
Does a Spanish spouse mean citizenship after two years?
No. A qualifying spouse case can have a one-year legal-residence requirement and additional conditions. Marriage does not automatically grant nationality. For Nigerian applicants, the general residence period is normally ten years unless a specific reduction applies.
When does long-term residence become possible?
Usually after five qualifying years, subject to the applicable status, continuity and absence conditions. Do not count every study period as ordinary residence or equate this permission with citizenship.
What should a family compare before moving?
Check each person’s route, work rights, school arrangements, insurance and renewal conditions. Budget deposits, document preparation and a period without income in addition to monthly living costs. Keep emergency funds accessible rather than assuming immediate access to a Spanish account.
