Austria income tax rises in bands: moving into the next band does not mean the whole income is taxed at that new rate. In 2026, the zero-rate band ends at €13,539 of annual taxable income. This is not a universal tax-free gross salary.

This guide explains the scale, special salary payments, residence and VAT. A Nigerian citizen moving from Nigeria with income in more than one country should distinguish Austrian domestic rules from any separately established international relief.

How the Austrian income-tax scale works

Part of annual taxable income in 2026Rate
Up to and including €13,5390%
Above €13,539 through €21,99220%
Above €21,992 through €36,45830%
Above €36,458 through €70,36540%
Above €70,365 through €104,85948%
Above €104,859 through €1,000,00050%
Above €1,000,00055%

A higher band changes the treatment of the excess while retaining earlier rates for lower portions. The 55% band above one million applies temporarily through 2029 inclusive. Other thresholds are indexed, so 2026 income needs the corresponding year’s scale.

Example: an annual taxable base of €45,000

Assume annual taxable income has already been determined as €45,000. Calculate only ordinary scale tax before personal tax credits. This is neither gross salary nor business turnover, and it is not a take-home-pay calculation.

  • The first €13,539 × 0% = €0.
  • The next €8,453 × 20% = €1,690.60.
  • The next €14,466 × 30% = €4,339.80.
  • The remaining €8,542 × 40% = €3,416.80.

Total scale tax is €9,447.20. That is approximately 20.99% of the €45,000 base. The 40% marginal rate applies only to the final portion. Personal tax credits and other statutory adjustments can change the final liability.

To turn a gross salary offer into income after deductions, first determine insurance contributions, taxable income and special-payment treatment. Simply subtracting this example’s €9,447.20 from gross salary would be incorrect.

Insurance contributions and thirteenth and fourteenth payments

Lohnsteuer is tax withheld from salary. Its calculation uses the base after relevant insurance deductions and statutory reductions. The income-tax scale therefore does not describe every employee deduction. Employer and employee insurance shares must also be separated.

Where the contract or applicable rules provide holiday and Christmas payments, special treatment may apply. Section 67 EStG sets separate rates and limits, including Jahressechstel, the annual-sixth limit for preferential special-payment taxation. “Thirteenth and fourteenth salaries are always taxed at only 6%” is insufficient: amount, insurance and limits matter.

  • Request annual gross pay and the number of payments, not only an ordinary monthly amount.
  • Separate regular salary, special payments and conditional bonuses.
  • Check which credits the employer already applies.
  • Compare after-deduction income across the whole year: an ordinary month differs from a month with extra payments.

When comparing two offers, identical monthly base pay need not mean identical annual income. Reconcile the complete annual package before calculating household spending.

Tax residence and income retained in Nigeria

Unlimited Austrian tax liability generally arises from a home available for longer-term use or habitual abode. After six months of presence it arises in any event, retroactively. This does not make the first six months automatically tax-free: a home can trigger liability earlier. Nationality alone does not decide residence.

Unlimited liability generally includes worldwide income; limited liability concerns relevant Austrian-source income. Record residence and receipt dates, available homes and each income’s connection with each country when moving.

Do not assume Austrian taxation ignores income still paid in Nigeria or that a Nigerian tax payment is automatically creditable. Check whether a relevant treaty is in force and applicable; absent treaty relief, assess any available Austrian domestic relief for the actual income. The BMF treaty list checked for this article does not list Nigeria. The Russia-specific suspension in the Russian version must not be applied to Nigerians.

Keep Nigerian salary, rent, services and investment-income records separately, with proof of foreign tax and the currency conversion used. Proof of payment is important but alone does not establish entitlement to a particular Austrian credit. A transfer of existing savings and new taxable income also require different explanations.

Austrian VAT: 20%, 13%, 10% and 4.9%

Standard Umsatzsteuer is 20%. Statutorily specified transactions use reduced rates of 10%, 13% or 4.9%; exemptions have different input-tax consequences. The goods or services determine treatment, not the seller’s preferred rate.

From 1 July 2026, 4.9% applies to selected food products classified in the statutory annex. Examples include qualifying milk, eggs, vegetables, fruit, rice, pasta and bread categories. The reduction covers supply and import of the listed products, not restaurant transactions. It does not cover every grocery product or café purchase.

For consumers, VAT is usually included in the purchase price. It is a consumption tax, not another payroll percentage. A €100 price before VAT becomes €120 at 20%. The VAT inside €120 is €20, not €24.

Self-employment and companies have different taxes

Small businesses can qualify for a VAT exemption. The basic Kleinunternehmerregelung threshold is turnover not exceeding €55,000 in either the previous or current calendar year, subject to turnover definitions and permitted-excess rules. Exempt businesses generally lack input-VAT deduction rights. Businesses established in another EU state have additional conditions; a Nigerian business should not assume the same eligibility.

VAT exemption is not exemption from income tax or insurance. Independent activity requires its own profit and contribution calculation. A turnover threshold cannot be compared with the zero-rate band for annual taxable income.

An ordinary GmbH’s basic corporate profit-tax rate is 23%. Distribution to an individual can create a second level: USP lists ordinary distribution taxation at 27.5%. “A business owner only pays 23%” therefore does not describe the complete calculation. Check the recipient’s status and possible exceptions.

Mandatory filing versus voluntary employee assessment

Arbeitnehmerveranlagung recalculates an employee’s annual tax and allows eligible costs or credits to be claimed. Uneven employment can produce a refund, for example, but refunds are not guaranteed. Voluntary applications generally have a five-year window; first establish whether filing is mandatory instead.

The general mandatory annual-return deadline is 30 April of the following year on paper or 30 June electronically through FinanzOnline. Extensions and representation arrangements can change timing. The five-year voluntary window is not a substitute for a mandatory deadline.

Ordinary annual reporting for 2026 income is in the following year. Before filing, gather employer statements, eligible-expense evidence and foreign-tax records; determine residence and the correct form. Worldwide-income or special income cases can need a different form from a simple employee assessment.

First separate voluntary reassessment from compulsory reporting, then check the form and deadline. A Nigerian newcomer should also retain the arrival date and income history for the part of the year before relocation. Neither a refund estimate nor a payroll simulation settles the complete cross-border return.

To relate tax bands to pay, consult the guide to salaries in Austria; additional annual payments need consistent period treatment.

If a calculation concerns a job offer, also check Austrian employment routes: a tax illustration does not establish employment eligibility.
