Average salary in Portugal depends on the data period and measure. DGE’s publication of INE results for 2025 gives average total gross monthly earnings of EUR 1,694, a regular component of EUR 1,365 and a basic component of EUR 1,277. These are annual statistical measures, not an offer of salary or take-home pay in 2026.

For an offer considered from Nigeria, examine pay composition and the annual total. A base salary with two additional allowances cannot be compared directly with an amount already including them. Put offers on the same annual basis before estimating personal deductions and spending.

What the average actually measures

Total, regular and basic components differ. Use a consistent measure and period when comparing figures; a mean cannot substitute for a median.

For 2025, total nominal earnings increased by 5.6% compared with 2024. This is the published annual change, not an equal rise for every worker. Purchasing-power assessment requires inflation to be considered separately.

Total earnings and base salary have different components. Bonuses and additional payments can enter the total, so it cannot automatically be treated as an employee’s regular contractual salary. Establish the actual components and payment dates.

A mean does not mean half of employees earn above it: that describes a median. Part-time work, a seasonal contract and permanent full-time employment need separate comparisons. Match duties, qualifications, hours, region and guaranteed components rather than a national headline.

Annual pay and fourteen payments

Portugal provides subsídio de férias and subsídio de Natal, holiday and Christmas allowances. In the ordinary full-year model each corresponds to a month’s relevant remuneration, while incomplete periods can produce proportional amounts. Under duodécimos they can be spread alongside monthly salary.

Assume €1,200 base, a full working year and two €1,200 allowances with no other components. Annual gross is €1,200 × 14 = €16,800. Spread evenly over twelve months it is €1,400. That is the same annual income on another calendar, not a €200 base-pay rise.

OfferAnnual gross under the stated model
€1,200 × 14 payments€16,800
€1,400 × 12, with both allowances already included€16,800
€1,400 × 14, with allowances above 12 salaries€19,600

Check whether allowances are included in the quoted monthly or annual amount, otherwise duodécimos can be added twice. Obtain a separate calculation for a joining or leaving year or interrupted employment: base × 14 may not describe your entitlement.

The same hypothetical complete model at the €920 mainland minimum gives €12,880 annually, or approximately €1,073.33 per calendar month after division by twelve. This is a distribution equivalent, not a new monthly statutory minimum or take-home pay.

Portugal minimum wage in 2026

From 1 January 2026, mainland retribuição mínima mensal garantida is €920 under Decree-Law 139/2025. The Azores and Madeira have regional rules; do not apply the mainland amount automatically to them.

The floor is a legal benchmark for relevant employment conditions, not an average or a living budget. It does not establish sufficient remuneration for every migration category. Check hours and applicable sector terms in the actual contract.

Segurança Social and IRS on the payslip

Under the general employee regime, the worker contributes 11% to social security. The ordinary commercial-sector employer share of 23.75% is separate and must not also be subtracted from the employee’s agreed gross salary. Special categories can use different rates or bases.

If an illustrative €1,200 month is entirely within the employee contribution base at 11%, the deduction is €132. The €1,068 remainder is not final net income: IRS withholding and other applicable payslip items remain.

Net pay follows employee contributions and IRS withholding. The withholding depends on income and applicable personal circumstances; one universal percentage is unsuitable. In-year IRS withholding and final annual liability serve different functions. A personal payment estimate needs the employee’s facts rather than the national average alone.

The ordinary month versus an allowance month

Request an ordinary payslip example showing base salary and deductions, and a separate breakdown for a holiday- or Christmas-allowance month. With duodécimos, check the allowance lines in regular payroll so neither a duplicate addition nor a missing payment is concealed.

Holiday salary and holiday allowance are different elements. Paid leave does not ordinarily cancel entitlement to the allowance; the first employment year has particular rules. Do not classify every payment received during leave as ordinary salary if an allowance was also paid.

Prepare the household budget separately. Rent, family composition and transport are not identical mandatory deductions for everyone earning an average salary. A Nigerian relocation plan also needs document, travel and initial accommodation costs, plus dated currency conversion for any family transfers.
