For ordinary relocation to Portuguese employment from Nigeria, find an employer and agree a contract or binding promise, then pursue the appropriate residence visa. A vacancy in a chat group, a NIF tax number or an interview invitation alone establishes neither work nor residence permission.

This guide covers new recruitment from abroad. An existing Portuguese residence permission needs assessment under its own activity rights and conditions. Two changes particularly matter to a new applicant: the end of ordinary manifestações de interesse and the qualified job-search category.

Changes to job searching and in-country applications

The former ordinary manifestações de interesse process under articles 88(2) and 89(2) was repealed from 4 June 2024. A new applicant cannot plan “enter as a tourist, find work and file MI” from an old online instruction.

Transitional arrangements exist for specified earlier situations. AIMA describes a regime for certain people registered and contributing to social security before the prescribed date. This is not a new general option for a Nigerian arriving now, nor evidence that every special in-country ground has disappeared.

The current article 57-A describes qualified job seeking: the prescribed specialised technical skills are required and authorised activity relates to highly qualified work. Do not use an old general job-seeker guide as permission for any applicant. Confirm operational acceptance and current evidence with the competent consular authority. This article does not establish an available appointment or a currently accepted application for this new category.

Finding work through IEFP and directly

The public iefponline service offers filters for geography, occupation, requirements, conditions and advertisement date. Select Oferta de Emprego, then a region and appropriate occupation. Viewing a vacancy and applying within the service are different functions: an internal application requires a candidate profile and compliance with the vacancy’s conditions.

First shortlist the place, function and requirements, then read the full listing. Match it with the employer’s career page. In the first contact, state that you live in Nigeria and require an application from abroad. Ask about a contract or promise of contract supporting the relevant route.

Tailor the CV to actual duties: relevant tasks, achievements, experience, language and qualifications. Regulated professions require separate recognition by the competent authority. “No language required” does not remove document or professional-admission requirements.

Job collections and communities are contact sources. “Portugal jobs for Nigerians” does not establish that the employer arranges new immigration permission: the offer may target workers who already have work rights.

Which route to establish with the employer

SituationEstablish before spending
Ordinary recruitment from abroadWhether the dependent-employment residence visa fits, with a contract or written promise.
Highly qualified roleWhether a separate category applies, with its qualification and salary conditions.
Existing lawful statusWhether it permits this activity or requires a change or new application.
Invitation to arrive without a contractThe currently valid basis for searching, working and remaining.

The principal route here is dependent employment with a residence visa, often called D1. A visa code is not sufficient explanation: request its official category, document list and division of responsibilities between you and the employer.

The work visa and subsequent residence permission

Coordinate visa submission with the competent consular authority. For a Nigerian citizen resident in Nigeria, verify the official jurisdiction and national employment category. Do not copy a Moscow appointment process or assume a Schengen tourist centre accepts national work applications.

The official dependent-employment instructions require a contract or promise and evidence concerning identity, accommodation, resources, insurance and criminal records; regulated occupations also need professional entitlement. Confirm the current receiving authority’s exact list, translations and authentication before ordering documents, and check each record’s validity.

The visa and residence authorisation are different stages. For article 88(1), AIMA lists, among other evidence, an appropriate valid visa, employer confirmation of the work relationship, address and tax and social-security registration. Tax and social numbers alone do not replace permission.

The ordinary sequence with a contract differs from special and transitional routes. After decisions, check entry conditions, authorised activity and the required AIMA action. Booking, examination and physical document issuance are not the same date. A promised first working day must allow for the actual procedure rather than a recruiter’s guarantee.

Compare contract and pay conditions

A written promise of contract should identify both parties, their undertaking to conclude the contract, the work and remuneration. Also request workplace, schedule, proposed start, duration, probation, collective conditions and termination. “Vacancy reserved” alone is not an equivalent set of terms.

From 1 January 2026, the general mainland monthly minimum is €920 gross. Autonomous regions and applicable collective rules need their own checks. This minimum does not establish satisfaction of every immigration category’s salary test.

Separate gross base, applicable holiday and Christmas payments, allowances and conditional bonuses. Ask for the annual amount and whether additional payments are separate or spread over the year. Check paid hours, overtime and accommodation, food and transport deductions.

Obtain provisional net pay for the actual circumstances and prepare your own relocation budget. Housing and expenses should match the city and contract. Add Nigerian document and travel costs separately; do not mistake a general wage floor for the amount available to support the whole household.

Checking the company and intermediary

Request the full legal name, NIPC, address, signatory and, where available, the access code for certidão permanente. IRN’s official service provides company registration records and documents using a valid code. Registry evidence establishes particular company facts rather than authenticating an email or promising recruitment.

Independently confirm that the employer issued the contract or promessa de contrato, is correctly named and will provide application evidence. For an agency, obtain a separate service agreement naming the work product, price and refund conditions.

The correspondent, employment-contract party and service payee can be different people or entities. Establish their roles before transferring money. Confirm the real vacancy, employer and available route first, then plan costs and a relocation date.
