The standard Poland tax rate schedule for personal income uses rates of 12% and 32%, but neither is a universal deduction from gross salary. Income tax in Poland under this scale applies to annual taxable income, includes a tax-reducing amount, and is separate from social insurance and health contributions.

For a worker moving from Nigeria, the starting questions are your tax residence, the type of contract and the income you will continue receiving abroad. Those answers matter more than nationality alone when estimating your obligations.

Establish your tax residence first

Under the Polish residence rules, you can be resident if your centre of personal or economic interests is in Poland or you spend more than 183 days there in a tax year. A regular Polish income is not, by itself, the statutory residence test.

Residents are generally subject to Polish tax on worldwide income; non-residents are generally taxed on Polish-source income. Relevant legal provisions and any applicable international agreement must then be considered. Keep records of travel, homes, employment and continuing overseas income so your position can be assessed.

The 2026 income tax scale

Standard PIT scale: annual taxable base in PLN, 2026
Taxable baseTax under the scale
Up to PLN 120,00012% of the base, less PLN 3,600; not below zero
Above PLN 120,000PLN 10,800 plus 32% of the excess over PLN 120,000

The PLN 3,600 reduction corresponds to the PLN 30,000 tax-free amount within this scale. It is not a separate deduction to subtract again before using the displayed formula. The official employment-income guidance sets out the tariff. Different types of income or business regimes can follow different rules.

A worked PIT example, not a net-salary estimate

Assume an annual taxable base of PLN 150,000 under the standard scale. The calculation before other applicable adjustments is:

  1. Excess over the threshold: PLN 150,000 − PLN 120,000 = PLN 30,000.
  2. Tax on that excess: PLN 30,000 × 32% = PLN 9,600.
  3. Total PIT: PLN 10,800 + PLN 9,600 = PLN 20,400.

This does not mean that someone with PLN 150,000 of gross salary receives PLN 129,600 net. The input is taxable income, not gross pay, and the calculation excludes other payroll components. The marginal rate on the excess is also different from the effective PIT rate on the whole base.

What else affects take-home pay?

Payroll can include employee social insurance and health contributions as well as income tax. Contract type, applicable reliefs, participation in relevant savings arrangements and personal circumstances can change the calculation. Employer contributions are distinct from deductions taken from the employee’s gross pay.

Ask for a payroll estimate showing the year, contract and assumptions. Then check for separately agreed accommodation or transport deductions. Our Polish salary comparison guide explains how to read the gross amount in an offer.

If you retain income in Nigeria

Prepare details of rent, business income, interest, dividends or remote work that will continue after your move. Record where the work is physically performed and retain evidence of foreign tax paid. The location of the receiving bank account does not determine the whole tax treatment.

The Ministry of Finance treaty list records a Nigeria agreement signed in 1999, but the displayed entry does not give an entry-into-force or application date. Do not treat a signature as proof of an operative treaty benefit. Have the applicable domestic rules and any available relief checked for the year and income concerned.

VAT and local taxes are separate from PIT

For ordinary purchases, VAT is a consumption tax reflected in the relevant price, rather than another payroll withholding. Poland’s tax administration lists a 23% standard rate and specified 8%, 5% and 0% rates in its VAT guidance. Which rate applies depends on the supply and conditions.

A business or freelancer may have registration, invoicing and reporting duties beyond personal income tax. Starting a business does not automatically place all earnings under the employee scale or give an unrestricted right to deduct input VAT.

Property and certain transport-related local liabilities have their own authorities and rules. A company-car driver should not assume that every vehicle owner owes the same local charge. Identify the liability before choosing the return, payment account and deadline.

PIT-11, your annual return and online access

Keep the income information received from each employer or payer, including relevant PIT-11 documents. Compare these with your payslips and the return prepared in Twój e-PIT. A pre-filled return can still need changes, particularly where foreign income or personal reliefs are involved.

For the 2025 income-year campaign ending on 30 April 2026, official guidance described automatic acceptance of qualifying PIT-37 and PIT-38 returns, while PIT-28, PIT-36 and PIT-36L required action. Do not extend that process to every return or assume next year’s procedure without checking. See the campaign instructions.

Profil Zaufany is not the only access method. The official access guidance also describes other authentication options. Use the method available to you and keep the submission acknowledgement.

Check the payment account and your next step

Verify the correct account for the liability you are paying. A tax micro-account should not be treated as the universal destination for social insurance or every local charge. Check the payment title, identifier and current instructions before transferring money.

If your move is still at the recruitment stage, follow the work and visa route from Nigeria to Poland. A tax registration or payroll estimate does not establish immigration permission.

A practical annual-return file

KeepWhy it matters
PIT-11 from each relevant payerReconcile reported income and withholding with your own records
Residence and travel evidenceExplain the year of arrival and any cross-border period
Foreign-income and tax documentsSupport the treatment of continuing income outside Poland
Evidence for claimed reliefsCheck entitlement instead of accepting every pre-filled deduction
Submission acknowledgement and payment receiptRetain evidence of what was sent and paid

Use PESEL or NIP as required for your status and the transaction, and make sure the identifier matches the records held by the payer. One online portal does not merge the separate responsibilities of the tax administration, ZUS and municipalities.

If a payer’s information is wrong, ask about a correction rather than silently making every record inconsistent. Check how to correct an already submitted return where needed. No refund amount or eligibility can be guaranteed merely because you worked for only part of the year.

Poland tax for foreigners: does a net quote settle the calculation?

No. A Poland salary tax estimate should identify residence, the contract, reliefs and insurance assumptions. Ask for the breakdown and distinguish it from final annual PIT.
